Use of 'An'
1. Before words beginning with vowel sound.
e.g a,e,i,o,u
2. Before words beginning with silent 'h'
e.g hour, heir, honest
3. F,H,L,M,N,R,S,X are letter that are not vowel but beginning with vowel sound 'M' has the sound 'em', for 'S' is 'as'... like wise

This are the three basic rules to be kept in mind. its is very easy, isn't it! Now you can use 'an' in appropriate place.
Use of 'A'
1. In the sense of one
e.g a one-man show, a one rupee note.
since 'one begins with sound of 'w'

2. Before words beginning with consonant sound
e.g a boy, a dog,a goat,a kite etc.

3. With Vowel letters having Consonant value
e.g a university, a European language

4. In exclamatory expression before singular countable noun
e.g What a pretty girl!

5. With certain expressions of quantity
e.g a lots of, a dozen, a couple

6. With a person's name to indicate the person is perhaps unknown to the person addressed.
e.g. A Mr.ROY is at the door
Use of 'The'
1. When we speak of s particular person or things already referred to.
e.g. I dislike the follow
2. When a singular noun represents a whole class.
e.g The mango is considered the king among fruits
3. With name of
i) gulfs, river, oceans and mountains
ii) Certain books
iii)Musical instrument
iv) The invention
e.g. I hate the telephone for its constant ringing
v) Parts of body
vi) Religious groups
vii) Names enforcing law
e.g. the police, the navy, the Air Force
viii) Political parties
e.g. the congress, the Janata party
ix) Aeroplanes, ship, trains etc.
e.g the Rajdhani express
x)Before the name of empire,dynasty or historical events
xi) Clubs foundation etc.
xii)With superlatives
e.g He is the best boy in the class
xiii) Before the comparative degree
e.g The more they get, the more they want
xiv) Before an adjective when the noun is understood
e.g. The poor would favour him.
